Suzhou, China | October 27, 2026 — As electric vehicle drive systems continue to evolve, controlling shaft currents and protecting motor bearings are receiving increasing attention across the automotive industry. VOLSUN hosted an industry meeting and technical workshop in Suzhou, bringing together experts from across the electric drive supply chain to discuss technical requirements and standardization initiatives for motor reliability.

Organized by the Electric Drive Systems Working Group of the Electric Vehicle Industry Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance, the event welcomed representatives from automotive manufacturers, electric drive system suppliers, bearing manufacturers, functional material companies, universities, and research institutions.
Bringing Industry and Manufacturing Expertise Together
The event began with a visit to VOLSUN's facilities, where participants learned about the company's functional materials, shaft grounding ring products, manufacturing processes, and engineering applications. The visit provided an opportunity to exchange practical insights on material performance and solutions for electric motor protection.

The technical meeting later continued at Suzhou Tianping Hotel. VOLSUN Chairman Zhu Xiaoyong welcomed the participants and highlighted the value of cooperation throughout the automotive supply chain.
The workshop also took place during VOLSUN's 20th anniversary year, marking two decades of work in functional materials and industrial applications.
Three Approaches to Managing Electrical Risks in Electric Motors
With the increasing use of high-voltage architectures, high-frequency switching, and high-speed motors, electrical conditions within electric drive systems have become an important consideration in bearing reliability. The workshop examined three technical approaches, each addressing a different aspect of electrical protection.
- Common-mode suppression magnetic cores
Xu Lei of CITIC Metal introduced a proposed technical specification for magnetic cores intended to suppress high-frequency common-mode currents. This approach focuses on managing electrical disturbances within the drive system.
- Shaft grounding rings
Li Xin, Application Technology Manager at VOLSUN, presented a proposed technical specification for shaft grounding rings designed to mitigate bearing current risks in electric drive motors.
A shaft grounding ring establishes a low-impedance conductive path between the rotating shaft and the motor housing. Under suitable operating conditions, this helps divert shaft current away from sensitive bearing contact surfaces, reducing the risk of electrical erosion and related bearing damage.
- Insulated bearings
Xu Xiaoyang of SKF Automotive Technology (Shanghai) presented a proposed technical specification for insulated bearings, with emphasis on electrical insulation performance and reliability evaluation.
These approaches address different electrical mechanisms and operating conditions. Their suitability depends on factors such as motor architecture, electrical characteristics, application environment, and verification requirements. Technical evaluation is therefore essential when developing an appropriate bearing protection strategy.

Technical Standardization for Long-Term Reliability
Beyond the individual technical presentations, the workshop provided a platform for participants to exchange views on specification requirements, application scenarios, testing methods, and long-term performance.
The working group plans to continue collecting industry feedback and advancing the development of the relevant technical specifications. This ongoing process is intended to support more consistent technical evaluation and strengthen collaboration among stakeholders in the electric drive industry.
For VOLSUN, participating in these discussions reflects its continued engagement with practical engineering challenges in electric motor applications. Through functional material development, shaft grounding ring solutions, manufacturing capabilities, and industry collaboration, the company continues to support efforts to improve electrical protection and motor reliability.
As electric mobility advances, cooperation between material suppliers, component manufacturers, and automotive technology developers will remain important in addressing emerging engineering requirements.
