1. What is a cold shrink tube?

A cold shrink tube is a rubber sleeve that is factory-stretched onto a removable plastic support core. Pull the core out and the tube shrinks onto the cable or connector at room temperature — no heat, no torch, no heat gun. It is used to seal, insulate and protect cable joints and connectors.

2. How does a cold shrink tube work?

The rubber tube is pre-expanded and held open by a spiral support core. Removing the core lets the rubber return to its relaxed shape, gripping the cable with constant radial pressure and forming a tight, uniform seal. Because the shrink comes from the rubber's own elastic memory, the result is consistent every time.

3. Cold shrink vs heat shrink — what is the difference?

Cold shrink needs no heat or special tools; heat shrink needs a heat gun or torch. Cold shrink is safer near flammable equipment, installs normally in freezing weather, and gives more uniform results that depend less on operator skill.

4. What materials are cold shrink tubes made from?

Mainly EPDM rubber and silicone rubber. EPDM cold shrink tubes resist puncture, abrasion and chemicals better and cost less. Silicone cold shrink tubes stay flexible over a much wider temperature range and seal better in wet, tight spaces (the mastic version). VOLSUN makes both, plus specialized builds.

5. What temperature can cold shrink tubes handle?

It depends on the material. VOLSUN's silicone lines run continuously from −60 °C to +200 °C; the mastic-sealed silicone is validated from −40 °C to +80 °C in harsh-environment testing; the EPDM line is built for long-term outdoor, overhead, underground and buried use. Always confirm the exact range for your model in the datasheet.

6. Are cold shrink tubes waterproof?

Yes. VOLSUN's silicone & EPDM cold shrink is IP68 rated (IEC 60529).

7. Can they be used outdoors and in cold weather?

Yes. They install at room temperature with no heat, so cold weather is not a problem, and both EPDM and silicone resist weather, UV and ozone for long-term outdoor service.

8. Are cold shrink tubes reusable?

No. Once the support core is removed the tube shrinks permanently. You can slide and position it before pulling the core, but it cannot be re-expanded after activation.

9. How do I choose the right size?

Match two numbers from the datasheet: the expanded (installed) inner diameter must be larger than the cable's outer diameter, and the recovered inner diameter must be smaller so the tube grips firmly. Custom sizes are available.

10. Do you offer custom sizes and materials?

Yes. VOLSUN accepts custom dimensions, materials (EPDM or silicone), mastic options, colors and printing, with on-time delivery — even on custom orders.

11. Do VOLSUN cold shrink tubes meet RoHS, REACH?

Yes. Both the silicone and EPDM cold shrink tubes are RoHS and REACH compliant.
